Illustrated diagram of simple tooth extraction procedure at Brian K. Rounds, DDSThe teeth perform several important functions in your mouth. They allow you to eat a variety of different foods. They aid in proper speech and effective verbal communication. They help to maintain the strength of your jaw. The teeth also work to provide you with a beautiful smile. When your teeth become damaged, the first option is to treat and restore them. However, this is not always possible. If your teeth cannot be saved following damage, Brian K. Rounds, DDS can perform an extraction.

Why Do Teeth Need to Be Extracted?

Damaged teeth should never be ignored. While minor damage only causes cosmetic issues, the damage that extends past the enamel and into the inner layers can lead to serious infections. Bacteria that enter the damaged teeth can then enter the bloodstream, which can contribute to serious health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Significant damage can also compromise the strength of the affected teeth.

When your teeth have been severely damaged, the goal is to save them, restoring their strength while keeping them in the jaw. However, in some cases, the damage is so severe that no restorative treatment will prove effective. In such cases, the best course of action is to extract the teeth, as leaving them in your mouth will only put your oral health in further jeopardy.

Before deciding to extract your teeth, we first perform a thorough oral evaluation. We look at the condition of the damaged teeth and check the gums for signs of infection. We will also take X-rays, which will enable us to see damage to the teeth, if any, below the gum line as well as any signs of infections, such as abscesses. After assessing the damage, we will determine if any restorative procedures will be effective. If we determine the teeth be beyond repair, we will then recommend an extraction, and discuss your options for tooth replacement.

Common reasons for tooth extractions include:
•  Cracks that start in the crown and extend below the gum line.
•  Teeth that are split completely in half.
•  Teeth that are shattered.
•  Severe tooth decay.
•  Overcrowding. In some cases of overcrowding, one or more teeth may need to be removed to make orthodontic treatment possible.
•  Impacted teeth. Impaction is most common with wisdom teeth, but any teeth can be affected. These are teeth that cannot erupt properly through the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth are usually treated with extraction.

Simple Tooth Extractions

A simple tooth extraction, like the name suggests, is a straightforward procedure. Done under a local anesthetic, the affected tooth is moved back and forth, putting pressure on the periodontal ligament. This widens the socket, eventually allowing us to lift the tooth out.

Surgical Tooth Extractions

A surgical extraction is one that is used when the situation is more complicated. The tooth may be shattered, split or blocked by bone or soft tissue. Surgical extractions are done under local anesthetic and sedation. We make small incisions in your gums, exposing the affected teeth. We then work to remove the teeth.

In some cases, this may involve the removal of a small amount of bone to unblock the tooth. If the tooth is whole, it may need to be broken to facilitate the procedure. We make sure to clean out all tooth fragments before finally suturing he gums closed.

If your teeth are damaged beyond repair, an extraction becomes necessary. Once the teeth have been removed, we can then discuss your available options for tooth replacement. For more information, and to schedule your consultation, call Brian K. Rounds, DDS today at (360) 764-5236.
