Many procedures designed to improve the function of your teeth will also give you a brighter, more complete smile. Our professionals at Brian K. Rounds, DDS offer many procedures to leave you feeling better and smiling brighter. One such procedure is traditional dental crowns.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a restorative and cosmetic procedure that involves capping your existing tooth. A crown is utilized when a tooth suffers damage or decay that is too significant to repair with a filling, inlay, or other less substantial restorative means. The purpose of a crown is to completely encapsulate your existing tooth. Crowns are sometimes used in conjunction with other cosmetic dental procedures, such as the placement of a dental bridge.
The crown will protect and strengthen your damaged tooth, allowing our team to salvage the tooth. The crown will be matched to the shade of your existing teeth and will blend seamlessly with your smile. The crown will also protect your tooth from additional damage and irritation.

What Is a Traditional Crown?

A normal or traditional crown is created in several steps. During your initial visit, our professionals will take a mold of your tooth. The mold is then sent to a lab as a reference to create your crown. Once the lab receives your dental mold, a technician will hand-craft your crown.
They will utilize a composite of several different materials to make your crown. The material selected for your crown will be discussed with you during your initial visit. If you want a color-matched crown, it will need to be made out of a porcelain material. Depending on your preference, the crown can also be made out of metal, such as gold.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

Receiving a traditional crown will take at least two separate visits. During your first visit, our team will discuss what materials are available for your crown. If your goal is for cosmetic improvement, then porcelain is the most popular option. This is also when our professionals will take a mold of your teeth.
Your traditional crown will take approximately two to four weeks to be completed. This is a result of the mold being sent to an offsite lab for production. Once the crown is received, our team will schedule your follow-up visit.

When you arrive for this second visit, our team will first administer a local anesthetic to the area. They will then remove any damaged enamel to prepare your natural tooth for the crown. After the area is prepared, they will cement the crown over your existing tooth. Our team will ensure that the shade of the crown matches your adjacent teeth.

After your procedure is complete, our team will review aftercare procedures with you. It is vital to schedule regular cleanings and exams to maximize the life of your new crown. Your crown can last up to 15 years with proper care.

Crowns are a great way to save a damaged tooth while also improving your smile. Our team at Brian K. Rounds, DDS can meet all of your cosmetic dental needs. Contact us at (360) 764-5236 today.
