|Proper care for your toothbrush goes much further than simply replacing it once every three months (when it starts showing signs of wear or tear) or after you're done being sick. It's also important to sanitize your toothbrush on a regular basis.
There are a few different ways you can do this. Since each of them works equally as well, it's up to you to decide which of these options works best for you.
Boil Your ToothbrushWhile this method is the hardest on your toothbrush, it's the one that will get rid of most of the germs that are taking refuge in its bristles. Simply boil a pan of water on the top of your stove and let your toothbrush boil along with it for about three minutes. Another similar option that also works well here is to simply place your toothbrush in the silverware compartment of your dishwasher when you run a load of dishes through it.
Soak Your ToothbrushThis may be an even easier option for you: Simply soak your toothbrush in some vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. All you need is a cup that's tall enough to hold your toothbrush and enough of this solution to cover your toothbrush's bristles. You should do this at least once a week, overnight, so all the germs on your toothbrush are killed.
However, if you forget to do it and you want a quick fix, you can simply mix a teaspoon of peroxide with a cup of water then simply swish your toothbrush through it before brushing your teeth. Regardless of which of these options you choose, you should always make sure to thoroughly rinse your toothbrush with hot water before using it again.
